The Wrap for Week One 2024

Hi readers, it’s a wrap for my first week of 2024. Surprisingly, it’s been a smooth and quiet first week. At least comparing to 2023, it’s a much better. My wife and I started off 2023 very rough with COVID for the both of us. My wife experienced the worst cough I have ever seen and she suffered a broken rib from the cough. Our 2023 did get better, much much better later on, but that was not a good way to start of the year. 2024 is refreshingly quiet for this first week, and I hope for this trend continues.

One of the more notable event to share this week, the two foster kittens we have with us right now are going to be adopted! A lovely family of seven visited the kittens on Saturday and they quickly feel in love with the kittens. We have fostered a few different cats and kittens in 2023, and I have to say, these two current kittens are the best. (my person favorites, my wife may disagree). They are friendly, loves belly rubs, super active, and purrs all the time.

Our children Georgie and Charlotte on the other hand is a little hot and cold with the kittens. Previously when we fostered, we don’t let our children and our foster children have too much interactions. But this time, because the kittens are very friendly, we decided to introduce them to Georgie and Charlotte. I would say the overall experience is better than I anticipated. They bumped noses, sniffed each other, and our children would observe the kittens roam around the house at first. Eventually, the kittens got very brave and would approach Georgie and Charlotte, and they didn’t like that. In one occasion, Georgie smack one of the kitten in the face for approaching him to fast. The kitten was ok and it was quite funny to see. Since Charlotte likes to be observing from afar, when the kittens approached too quickly, she would quickly dart away and she can’t, her hissing begins. Interestingly, the kittens never got mad or scare of our children, which I think it’s very brave of them.

Something new I am trying to start this year is to create a dinner menu every week. I got this inspiration from doing a back-to-back two week cruise in December (something to share with y’all in a future post). It was very nice to have a menu for dinner every time. So I am trying to implement that at home too. I would plan a whole week’s worth of dinner idea every Saturday, so I don’t have to think about what to cook for dinner every night. It’s been four weeks so far, and it’s going well still. It was definitely easier during the first two weeks when I have a lot of ideas, but this week it feels a little harder to plan because I would like to minimize repeat meals within two weeks. Perhaps that’s something I need to be ok with or figure out creative little changes to make them different. Something new I tried this week is a clear daikon and brisket soup, made using the InstaPot. It was absolutely delicious to pair with rice and spring rolls. One improvement would be cook the brisket less. I am still trying to figure out the best timing for pressure cooking different foods.

That’s the wrap for this week. How was your first week of 2024?
